The Fourth of July. Fireworks.
250 years of Democracy. A day off from school and work. Picnics on the beach and in the parks. Hot dogs. Joey Chestnut trying to eat 85 of them in 10 minutes. All in all, a real celebration.
This year, as serendipity strikes, we also get to celebrate the Big Beautiful Bill passing Congress and watch, probably on Fox News, as our president hands our billionaires one of the greatest gifts our democracy has ever given to those trying to destroy it.
It’s an auspicious occasion. A day many will celebrate, but most will reflect on it with varying degrees of sadness and disbelief as that great rumbling sound we hear in the background is our democracy being flushed down the toilet.
It is indeed a day of reflection, and maybe when the fireworks displays are bursting forth around the nation (planned well before Trump took office), we can contemplate what it was like to live in a free nation, one of the best, and what it might feel like if it begins to go away.
And then decide to call it a day.
Pack up the blankets and kids and head home for a good night’s sleep and a welcome weekend. Or spend a few moments as those “bombs” burst in the air and think about what came before us and at what cost, and consider if it’s worth fighting for again.
